Replacing an underperforming WiFi provider

A provider change should not begin with unplugging equipment. It begins by proving what exists, who owns it and how residents stay online while responsibility changes hands.

The safe sequence

Contract and access review → live-building survey → target design → migration plan → controlled cutover → intensified monitoring. The outgoing service remains the fallback until the replacement has passed its agreed acceptance tests.

Establish control

Confirm contract dates, circuit ownership, hardware ownership, administrator access, support data and what the outgoing supplier must hand over.

Step 2

Survey what is really live

Map access points, switches, cabling, comms rooms, coverage gaps and the resident onboarding journey. Do not assume the documentation matches the building.

Step 3

Design the migration

Choose what can be retained, what must be replaced, how each area cuts over and what restores service if an acceptance test fails.

Step 4

Move support with the network

Give residents one clear contact route and equip the new helpdesk with building, room and network context before the first call arrives.

Step 5

Watch the real peak

Monitor after cutover through evening demand and, where timing allows, the first high-occupancy period rather than declaring success after an empty-building test.
